External Grants Management Assessment
Are You Having Internal Grants Management Issues in Your Organization?
There may come a point when you need to conduct an assessment of your organization's grants management efforts. This can be triggered by inquiries of the Board of Directors or executive staff questioning the grant success rate, oversight efforts and/or management systems. It could also simply mean wanting to have a better understanding of what your organization is doing well and how it can improve when it comes to writing grants and managing them. Is the "declined" over "awarded" ratio exceptionally high? Have you experienced a deficiency on your financial audit regarding grants management? Do you have the best systems in place to maximize the effectiveness of your grants management processes? Are you getting the most out of your grants management resources and reaching your development goals? This exclusive product provides your organization with an external evaluation of your grant writing and grants management systems. It identifies the issues that are creating obstacles to your success, what you are doing well and what steps can be put into place to get you on the right track to bring in those much-needed grant dollars. The External Grants Management Assessment gives you the professional and unbiased review you need with a clear set of action steps for success. Research and Assessment
Are You Grant Ready?
For smaller non-profit organizations, there comes a time when your Board of Directors and staff are thinking about moving the organization to the next level by pursuing grants. The Research and Assessment service will provide critically-needed consultation on whether or not your organization is “grant ready.” Do you have the proper systems and organizational capacity in place to begin writing grants? What are your next steps? (includes consultation with your organization and a written report with recommendations)
This service can also include assisting and advising non-profits on what is needed to get started in preparing an excellent grant application. CBK Grant Writing & Consulting can meet with you to go over exactly what you need to prepare for your grant application. What steps need to be taken? How should the materials be prepared? Often times, it's that extra help that can make all the difference in putting you on the road to success.
Grant Research
What Potential Funders Are Out There For You?
This service provides assistance mostly to organizations who have limited resources to research grants. It includes an initial consultation to assess your organization and a report identifying and analyzing potential funders. It can also include ongoing reporting support for your organization. Two available packages include:
Package One: Basic One-Time Report
This package includes an assessment of your organization and its funding needs; a thorough review of the funding landscape at the local, state and national level; and a report and listing of potential funders (private and corporate foundations, local, state and national government agencies, etc.) with contacts and submission deadlines.
Package Two: Ongoing Reporting Support
This package includes the basic one-time report (above), plus, for an additional fee per month, includes ongoing review of grants that become available and are made public –minimum one-year commitment.
Telling Your Story
Are You Able to Tell a Compelling Story to Potential Funders?
No matter how important your work is in the community, it won’t make a difference to funders if you don’t have a compelling story to tell. Funders don’t just want to know what you are doing; they want to be able to experience it. The ability to engage funders, to get them excited about your work and to support your efforts means learning how to tell your story. The Telling Your Story service includes creating a series of compelling stories for use in reaching potential funders, selling your “brand” and other marketing materials. This includes interviews with key staff and constituents and an 18-20 page white paper, in hard and electronic formats, for use in grant applications and outreach materials. The document will include specific stories of those impacted by your work in the community, including interviews, quotes, etc. CBK Grant Writing & Consulting can also work with your photographer to create photographic support for your future use.
Grant Reviews and Editing
Do You Need a Pair of Fresh Eyes to Review Your Grant?
Anyone who has ever written a grant knows that after working on an application and its supporting materials for so long, sometimes a pair of fresh eyes is needed. It is not only important to check for potential errors, but sometimes what we think we are communicating isn’t really what is being conveyed. Is there too much jargon? Are you making assumptions about what funders will understand about your organization and your programs? Is the program being described effectively? A grant review includes interviews with key program staff members, a review of the document(s) with specific recommendations in an easy-to-follow format.
Grant Writing
Do You Need Assistance Writing an Application?
CBK Grant Writing & Consulting can prepare well-written and compelling grant applications and/or letters of inquiry for your organization. he Grant Writing service includes developing a timeline for completion, collection of required materials and supporting documentation for submission, research and interviews with staff for content; completion of the required application (narratives, budget, etc.), and help in submitting the grant package or LOI, not on time, but EARLY. This service will include a review of the grant award, if received, and a customized “to do” schedule for follow up and meeting reporting requirements.
Overflow Grant/Development Support
Is Your Organization Running Up Against a Deadline and in Need of Additional Grant/Overdevelopment Support?
CBK Grant Writing & Consulting can assist your organization with any overflow grant work that may need to be completed before a looming deadline. Whether it is for five hours of extra assistance or an entire month, the Overflow Grant/Development Support service can help you get your grant applications in on time and produce outstanding work.
Corporate and Private Foundation Mid-Year and End-of-Year Reporting Support
Do You Need Help with a Mid-Year or End-of-Year Report?
An important part of the grant process, once you receive an award, is effectively communicating back to your funder about how their support contributed to your success. A thorough and timely report can mean the difference between continuing to receive support in the future or not. This service provides help in writing outstanding reports to corporate and private foundations for the grants you have received and making sure they are submitted on time.
Non-Commission Policy
It is the policy of CBK Grant Writing & Consulting to not interview with clients who want to pay for grant work on a commission/percentage basis. (See “Resources” page and The Professional Standards and Code of Ethics of the American Grant Writer’s Association for more information.)
I believe it is critical to properly assess the needs of an organization within the guidelines and giving strategies of funders to strategically pursue the best grants—“never trying to stick a square peg in a round hole.”
I believe it is vitally important to always submit grant applications not on time, but early. It is impossible to predict last-minute computer glitches, for example, which may arise in submitting applications and it is the grant writer’s responsibility to respect their client’s time—not putting undue pressure on them to pull together any final information right before a deadline.
I believe it is important to maintain the most accurate and detailed grant records for an organization to create a historical record that will be an important asset to staff and board members for years to come.
I believe in communicating with funders on a regular basis outside of the typical grant submission process. Funders should be thanked regularly and receive updates about how their support is making a difference for the organization.
I know that in doing these things that the grant work of an organization can be successful; and, hence, the organization can flourish.
